This weeks refection is called "A Broken Body Isn't A Broken Person". Jaime Shepherd the speaker in this video starts out this talk with a story.Telling us the story it took for her to get to be a cross country skier and her dream to get an Olympic medal.
One day she was riding her bike as she always did. Jaime before she knew it she was hit by a truck. She woke up with broken arms, legs, a shattered spinal cord and ribs. As she said in the video "I Had A Bad Day". Next thing she knew She was in the intensive care unit fighting for her life.
For weeks she debated weather or not to continue fighting for her life or to just give up. She heard a voice in her head saying "come on keep going, we can do it together". Jaime returned back to her body and the eternal bleeding stopped. But her back was still in pieces, the chances of her walking again were little to nothing. The only hope she has was the movement she had in her big toe. The doctors told her she would have no feeling from her waist down.
Months later she was able to leave the hospital. While she was home she started to be depressed, all she wanted to do was to put on her running shoes and go out the door. But everyday she worked toward being able to walk by herself. Jaime got to the point where she could wobble around the house holding on to the walls. After this she found a new passion. She was sitting down and looking out she saw a plane and new that's what she wanted to do. Jaime made an appointment to fly and she got to fly over the place where she got in the accident and that's when she realized that she thought to her self how far she has come from not being able to walk to being able to fly a plane.
After all of this she was able to pass her piolts medical exam and start training at flight school. Everyone there looked at her as though she would never be able to do it but she believed in her self to not listen to them. She was out of her comfort zone but she was breaking through it. Jaime learned to fly almost every plane. After she got all of her licenses to fly she went back to that school and taught other people to fly just 18 months after her accident.
